Monument Valley Film Set

Woah there... Arrived in Monument Valley at high noon (well about 4pm, because we are an hour ahead of Arizona time here). Anyway, Monument Valley... Monu-mental Valley more like.

Basically it was built in the early 40s for a consortium of Hollywood studios as a film set for westerns, by the same people who had built Jabba the Hut for the Star Wars films. As you can see from the pictures, they built huge papier mache rocks in the middle of the desert so that John Wayne et al could ride out with a posse and look authentic. I doubt you'd get planning permission for it now, even here. It has really stood the test of time and you can imagine what it was like, even 50 years ago.

We are staying at the appropriately named hotel called 'The View'. See if you can guess why! A truly amazing place, almost looks real.

  1. Are they seriously fake? Look incredibly real.

We should try and recreate them on the allotment!
